Exkursion

30 06 2008

As everzone has noted from mz absence from the big addiction called the internet, I am currentlz in Obergurgl, in the Ötz valley (Ötztal). Its reallz prettz here, all wilderness and fields and flowers. Wait until I get photos loaded up. But the other thing, hiking. I am ill-prepared for it definitelz. But woah the view from above, prettz darn amaying.

Today we went up to Beilstein, obviously a stone. Its a really pretty trail, it passes through part of the Zirbenwald, which is where the pine trees grow, and its really nice and covered with flowers at this part of the year.

What else. The place we are stazing is called Universität Zentrum Obergurgl. Its a 3 building complex (all linked UNDERGROUND, how cool is that!), and it has rooms, plus sauna, tanning room, steaming room, fitness room. Its practicallz a HOTEL. And I got a double room, except that I have no roommate, so that prettz cool, coz I have a big room to mzself. Besides that, we are served a 3 course dinner, everzdaz, and breakfast is zour standard full german breakfast. Meaning theres museli, cereal, bread of all sorts, spreads, ham and cheese, coffee, milk, cocoa… Anzthing zou can ever want to eat for breakfast. Thez want to fatten us up over here. But zah, I eat waz better here than when I cook, although I have to saz, its reallz saltz and tzpical german food.

Okaz I gotta go studz and get an earlz night. Tomorrow we are hiking even further up and longer. I need mz ibuprofen.

Spirit

28 06 2008

I forgot to say something, but well, at the Österreich Meisterschaft (Austrian Championships), Gazongas won the Spirit prize. Pretty amazing huh? Thats the 3rd time I have won a Spirit prize with a team. After playing so much Ultimate (okay, not actually that much, but 2 years and counting is quite a bit for me), and playing for so many different and varied teams, I discovered that well, Ultimate is just a game. And it doesn’t help if you scream and shout on the field, or play dirty and aggressive. Yah, go play hard, but keep within whats right, earn your victory the right way and do justice to your win. So what if you DON’T win? Its a game, learn from it, and better that game next time. To say this is much easier than executing it. How many times have players realised that most of the mistakes, are stupid ones. And its the stupid ones that make the difference. But it is exactly this point of time to not blow your top but to talk to the each other and work those problems out.

I hope Sg Ultimate introduces those new WFDF and BULA Spirit score sheets. Its about time in SG for people to pay more attention to the Spirit than to just focus on being the best in the region. Such things are trivial. The struggles only lead you so far before one realises that its Ultimately a Game, to be enjoyed and savored.

Medical breakthrough?

28 06 2008

I just discovered that Dji Sam Soe, is a cigarette brand. So Dji Sam Soe, the team, the pickup with awesome players, is sponsored by cigarettes. How ironic. Lung disease and heart attacks financing people in top physical form.

Unbelievable. Unless someone can point out a paper that says smoking is directionally proportionally to fitness.

Moving moving.

28 06 2008

I am officially out of Rössl in der Au. Its sad. My home for 10 months. And now I am out of it, kicked out by the New Orleans students. Its my 4th last day in Innsbruck. I saw the last of the Americans today. I probably will not see Baca again, or Mark, or Andrew, in quite some time. So yah its OFFICIAL. Its just me, all by myself now. I almost cried when Andrew and Baca were going off to the party. I wasn’t particularly close to either of them, nor was I extremely fond of them. Sigh. All these departures. I don’t like it. And now I am in Tirolerheim. Its a nice room. Small. For me myself and I.

I gotta say goodbye again soon. Last leg of the journey. Always the hardest.

You have Mail!

27 06 2008

Just sent back home a 18kg package. It was all my winter clothes. Lets just hope I didnt accidently add anything important inside the package. My room is technically still in a mess, and all hopes of writing my paper has disappeared. But really I need to do my paper within the next 2 days or else I am totally screwed. Sigh. All the hassle. I hate moving in hate moving out. I wanna just stay put. I have everything I want here. Sigh. Good night

Dismantling of a Room

26 06 2008

I am moving out soon. On Friday. So now my room is getting increasingly bare. The discs have came off the wall. The cards and letters have been stored in my keepsake box. My clothes are vacuum sealed and ready for shipping. Some signs of inhabitation are still around. Obviously like my messy table and the big pile of stuff around. But mostly, its all ’stowed’ away as much as possible. It looks strange. I miss my big green IKEA snake hanging near the ceiling. Its strange not seeing discs when I look at my wall. Moving is gonna be a hassle.

Had my last training yesterday. I didn’t get sobby or anything. But I guess, after writing out my farewell, I was kinda prepared for it. For saying goodbye. It was difficult to say that it was my last training already, and even more difficult to hand them the disc and say its going to be a while before I make it back to Austria.

Monika left yesterday too. Early early in the morning. It didn’t feel that early, but it was. It was chilly when she left. Like the atmosphere in Rössl after she left. Now theres only 3 ND kids around. And by tomorrow 2 more will be gone too. And then there will be just me and Europe.

Happenings

24 06 2008

Tim and Tiff arrived today. Kinda excited to see them. Nice to be around Asians again. And then there was the exam that got me all panicky. But I got through it, and its fine. But thats not the main point.

Tomorrow is my last training. Its time.

Back to Roots

23 06 2008

Thats the theme of the tournament. Back to Roots. My last tournament in Austria is officially over. And well, it was quite a ‘big’ tournament. Considering that it was the Austrian Championships after all. There were 5 women teams. Friskee beez, Spinderellas, Gazongas (us), Eyecatchers and Wadies. Our 1st 2 games was against Friskee beez and Wadies. It didn’t go too well. Next was against Eyecatchers, that one was SO SO tight. We were trading points practically all the way, but we got away with a 2 point win (I think). Then was against Spinderellas, who were great fun to play with. I think, that was the one game where I knew exactly what I was doing, how I was doing it, and it was a good game for me. And then coz of the really small number of women teams, we had to play Eyecatchers again. This time, the game went their way. I guess it was because we were all tired, and we made a lot of mistakes, so did Eyecatchers, but they made less mistakes than us, hence the game went to them this time.

Somehow I managed to screw my knee up, not badly, but it only started hurting after the last game (which was good), but it left me limping for the rest of the night. We had dinner, watched the match, and I went to sit down outside our little hut, staring at the stars. Then Mira and the kids came around, and we kinda walked around. Jakob, who’s this joker, accused the Catchup people (the organizers) of a lack of party (and its true). And I got tired of it, and finally went to bed at about 1.30.

Next morning, I kinda woke up late, lack of sleep was causing some cognitive congestion or something. So effectively, I forgot to bring my socks, I had to rush through breakfast, I forgot other stuff too. I had to climb through the window of the hut to get my socks, not pleasant. We ended up playing 2 games against Spinderellas today. 1st game didn’t go too well for me, I was worried for my knee, and I just felt like baaahhhhhhh. So I ended up being slightly pissed, and I am sorry Spinderellas, if my spirit was bad for that game. Really. I was tired and cranky and well, just hai.

Anyway, last game. That was exciting kinda. My knee pain went away, might have been the ibuprofen, but then I could run better. The Spinderellas put on a zone, a relatively effective one as a matter of fact. They got several points up, and took half time. The Spinderellas had fans too, who unfortunately started shouting, die Choi ist wichtig, bleib bei ihn! Which means, I am important, stay with her. So basically, I had no chance to pop. Kinda locked in their clam. Zone offense is something I need to figure out badly. But Gazongas came back after the 1st half and at the end of time, the score was tadaa 11-9 to Gazongas! It was a 1 point cap, they took their 10, and I went in for the offense. The handlers made an effective swing, and once the disc hit a corner, I took off and went into the endzone. Score! My last score, for my last game, for my last tournament in Austria. What a way to end my Ultimate experiences in Austria.

I really wanted to stay to watch the finals. It was the BigEz, the top team in Austria from Vienna, against Dji Sam Soe, which is this mishmash team from all over Austria, and boy are they both good. I still don’t know who won the finals, I was only there until the 1st half, which Dji Sam Soe took. But unfortunately I had to leave. Its hard to believe, my Ultimate in Austria has ended for the meantime. I don’t think I will be back for the next 3-4 years. I don’t want to leave, not yet. Not ready. I was preparing for goodbyes already, and I gave the Innsiders my Singapore disc, with my farewell note written on the back. But its hard to believe, that was the last tournament I played with them. That was the last time I will see them in 3-4 yrs.

I don’t like goodbyes. I really don’t. I don’t wanna say goodbye, I don’t wanna leave.

ÖM part II

20 06 2008

Going for the Austria Championships tomorrow. Its gonna be 5 on 5 women team. Don’t really like that. But its better than not playing. If only I was in Bar do Peixe. Sigh.

Roar.

The mini baguettes I got from M-Preise are sitting on my table and they still smell really really good. Tempting. Thats a feat, considering I got them at least 6 hrs ago. Gotta love their baked products.

Procrastination

19 06 2008

Have been watching way too many episodes of House. Its pretty interesting, especially how office politics is handled. But just to give you an example of the seriousness of my procrastination, heres the list of things I need to do.

  1. Book train tickets.
  2. Check out the transport-friends’ places at the various cities.
  3. Study my ecology/translate notes.
  4. Write plant development lab report.
  5. Write animal development lab report.
  6. Finish up the write-up for the imaginary grant seminar.
  7. Email professors AGAIN about taking an oral exam.
  8. Email secretary about getting my refund from the field trip.
  9. Research the places I am visiting so I know where I want to go.
  10. Take care of laundry matters.
  11. Pack my room in time for departure.
  12. Run to IKEA to get packing boxes.
  13. Post things back home.
  14. PANIC.
  15. Prepare farewell gifts for everyone.
I should go to bed so I can wake up early and harass the secretary mentioned above.
